What Else Is In The Teaches of Peaches?
June 3, 2008 7:33 PM   Subscribe

I'm looking for musical suggestions that might help me ... fuck the pain away.

Imagine a virtual stripper pole, with that post-1999 ubiquitous Matrix dripping green effect, the only brass in evidence the chutzpah of the exotic dancer in question. I am looking for music with the down-low buzzing tickle you heard lurking under PJ Harvey's "Down By the Water," as lo-fi and unclean in production as a trashed chopper. Electrosleaze coming in over barely-modified square waves like a cheap inverter would make. I'm looking for tunes one could conceivably dance to without gobbling down pills and standing on a jackhammer. Ladytron isn't filthy enough. This should sound like the background music to having unsafe sex with a complete stranger while under the influence of so many narcotics you didn't realize you were about to enjoy some Thai ladyboy.

Touchstone sounds: Lords of Acid, Lust; random bits of TKK; "Frank Sinatra" by Miss Kittin and The Hacker; and of course Peaches' demurely-titled "Fuck the Pain Away." Oddly, none of Peaches' other stuff quite does it for me.

I'm trying to stay away from music where the letters BPM prominently feature on the album cover; I'm avoiding boys in mesh shirts with amyl nitrates; I don't want stuff where it sounds like it is for beepy, clean robots to listen to while they antiseptically beam Bluetooth codes at each other.

Make me unclean.

I like Stock Exchange by Meess Keetteen and zee 'Acker better than Frank Sinatra. YMMV, but if you like them at all it's not wonder that Peaches doesn't do it for you.

'One Night in NYC' by the Horrorist is a classic.

There's some pretty raunchy stuff on the compilation 'Suck It And See' but I guess that's more lyrical content.

- Wooden Shjips are good for this, but there's no lyrical content usually. The song I'm thinking of is Shrinking Moon for You, it's got a slightly better beat than a lot of their YouTube stuff.
- Similarly Holy Fuck is good for this sort of dirty gritty music, but it is a little BPM-ish.
- The Butthole Surfers are good for this too, particularly stuff from Electriclarryland (Birds & Cough Syrup are two that come to mind)
- Jesus and Mary Chain is sort of the opium version of some of this stuff. Fuzzy but a little lovely, maybe not raw enough.
- Fu Manchu similarly, a little poppy but a very fuzzy sound and can really get going
- L7? Songs like Shitlist and they do a good cover of Let's Lynch the Landlord
- X used to be good for this back in the Los Angeles days but that may be a sort of archaic vibe now.
- The Reverend Horton Heat and the Cramps are a good psychobilly/shockabilly pair - they're a little lyric-heavy but the lyrics are pure sleaze in a lot of ways even when the music may be a little toe-tappin.

"I'm Coming Down" on Trans Am's Red Line album is a favorite of mine.

"The Pink Room" on the Twin Peaks- Fire Walk With Me soundtrack is sleazy, though perhaps not quite matching with your touchstones.

In the vein of jessamyn's suggestion, I've been looking for years and nobody makes me feel dirtier or more skeeved out than early Velvet Underground.

Response by poster: I tried X, actually went to a show of their not long ago - so bad I left. I actually like Jessamyn's suggestions, but I'm looking for something a little more ... electronic. Just like it was crappy electronic, some beat to hell Casio that got waterlogged one night and has never sounded the same.

Actually, "The Pink Room" is pretty good. Like we're back at One-Eyed Jacks.

I love this kind of stuff. Try Vitalic - for starters 'White Labels', and 'Soulshaker'. I have a great mix that includes a lot of Vitalic's stuff as well as 'Stock Exchange', and it's perfect.

I'm unclear on the need to avoid narcotics that enhance repetitive music but to seek out narcotics that enhance ladyboys. In my non-experience, these two are often related.

More prehistoric stuff (Less Sleaze - more raunchy lo-fi)

MC5 (Kick out the Jams, Motherfuckers!)
The New York Dolls (the first two albums)
Anything you can find solo by Johnny Thunders(New York Dolls guitarist) before he had his heroin overdose
Iggy and the Stooges.
Sex Pistols cover of the Stooges "NO FUN"

More recent:

My Chemical Romance (specifically THANK YOU FOR THE VENOM and GIVE 'EM HELL, KID)

On Edit: It's definitely not crappy electronic but (hopefully) worth posting anyway

Just about everything by Goldfrapp is sleazy.

Lies! Only the middle albums (Black Cherry + Supernature) are even the least bit sleazy. Way more electro than sleaze. More burlesque than anything. Definitely not lo-fi in any case. "Strict Machine" will likely be the best take-away song for your purposes. A few Frapp remixes on "We Are Glitter" are heavily electroclashy, too. Nothing too fitful, though.

Best I have is Emilie Simon - I Just Wanna be Your Dog [YouTube]. This is more clashy than the album version, but even that is pretty raw. Unfortunately, it's only tangential to the rest of her music.

Thanks for asking. This list is wicked.

Massive Attack - Angel came to mind (already mentioned). At one point this was voted best album to bump uglies to according to some publication I used to read (can't remember which).

Also other trip-hop derivatives: Tricky's Maxinquaye and Pre-Millenium Tension ("I'll fuck you in the ass/Just for a laugh/With the quick speed/I'll make your nose bleed" sung sweetly on "Abbaon Fat Track"), Portishead, etc.

There's always Lil' Louis' French Kiss from way back in the 80s. Because this is so old there are about 5 million remixes of it extant, but one of my favourites is the jungle version of French Kiss by Ed Rush and Optical (just heard it now on random play so how's that for synchronicity)?

From a quick scan of what I have lying around, these at least push the "sleaze" button for me, but they might not be electro enough, in many cases.

White Stripes/A Martyr For My Love For You, Seether/Gasoline, 1,000 Homo DJs/Supernaut, Sneaker Pimps/Post-Modern Sleaze/Spin Spin Sugar, Babylon Zoo/Spaceman, Dot Allison/We're Only Science, pretty much the whole of the Spawn soundtrack album, most of Lou Reed's output, Garbage/#1 Crush, Dust Brothers/Medula Oblongata, The Normal/Warm Leatherette
