Help me find new rock music please.

Ideally, someone's doing a podcast or torrent of mind-blowing new music that I'll like. Do you know of one? I like many kinds of music, but right now I'm specifically looking for heavily organic rock. The Raconteurs are exactly up my alley, for example.

Do you have a Last.fm account? It's free, and there is so much great and new music on that site. Just type in a band or label you like (Like 'ABBA' or 'Sweden'), and listen away. You can also tag the tracks you liked, for future reference. There are also friend's lists, neighbor groups of people with similar listening patterns, concert calendars, groups, etc. I love it. I have found so much new music there.

http://www.last.fm/user/spinifex23/ is my account there, so you can see what I've been listening to.

Pandora does something similar - it suggests music similar to what you've indicated you like, then you give each selection a thumbs up or a thumbs down, and the site learns your tastes from your votes.

Response by poster: Good suggestions and thank you but I'm looking more for podcasts or torrents, something I can take on the road or to the gym ...

i love sound opinions (podcast), but it doesn't cover that type of music exclusively (by a long shot). it will certainly review and feature music of that sort from time to time, however.

the indiefeed podcast is great - each download is for an individual song, the 'caster talks for a sec at the intro, then gives a brief blurb on the band and tells you where to find their album/music at the end of the mp3. it's wildly varied with regards to style (though it's all indie-sorta stuff, obviously) but i've been impressed with the quality of choices/'caster's taste - even stuff i don't like, i usually think "hmm, if i liked (insert name of genre i don't particularly like here) at all, i'd probably dig this band"

it's easy to find via itunes podcasts, if not via google (sorry no time to make a link for ya right now, i'm late for work!)

I really like the KEXP podcasts...Similar to 'Morning becomes Eclectic', live performances of usually something interesting and almost always an eclectic mix...my only complaint is that i'd like it to be longer.

Have you checked out blogs?

I am fuel you are friends and art decade are both good. Berkeley Place might do ok too. No torrents, just mp3s.

You make like the radio show The Magical World of Rock which is available in podcasts. The host is rocker Danko Jones (who, incidentally, the Raconteurs have covered in their live show). The show also occasionally features Ayal Senior who is currently in Braincloud and used to be in Herschel Savage and the American Flag. I've known both Danko and Ayal for years and they're both hugely knowledgeable about music--however, since I talk to them both on a regular basis, I don't actually listen to the show so can't really comment on it in particular.

I've said it before and I'll say it again--look up the monthly "indie rock playlist" torrent. IIRC, it's actually how I found out about the Raconteurs myself before they got heavy radio play. I also recommend Pandora, but I'm a bigger fan of Last.fm.

Raconteurs? What do you like about them?

I mean, I think they're kinda bog-standard indie rock, but if you like them, start with Brenden Benson's solo work, and then the Greenhornes. I'd imagine you've heard the White Stripes, and you might like ancillarily-connected Soledad Brothers or the Upholsterers. Then there's the broader spectrum of Detroit rock, with the SRC, The Witches, Outrageous Cherry, The Dirtbombs, The Paybacks and The Sights as leading contenders.

Moving away from Detroit, you'd likely enjoy Lifter Puller, The Hold Steady, The National, Spoon, The Vampire Hands, The Cave Deaths, Saturday Looks Good To Me, Scotty Karate, and a whole passel of other bands.

Besides the great songs and playing? I dunno. ;-)

Thanks everybody ... I'm off to feed my ears!

Yeah, no, what I meant was "What specifically do you enjoy so that I can recommend more bands that have those features?"

Great songs and playing is kinda like saying that you like movies with good actors in them—a little vague.

Oh okay, cool. Good question. Not sure what it is about them, it's a million things ... the individual sounds as well as the blend. Both of their voices. The dynamics and blues underpinnings. As it's often said, they sound like Zep,and I have never had a problem with that sound (though I'm not one of those classic rock clinging dudes). It's a very nice sound.

This week I'm into garagey, bluesy, stoner, heavy, but done out of love and done smartly. I already have some of your recommendations and I'll look up the others. I'm really just trying to find a podcast, since that's pretty much how I listen to things now.
