San Luis Obispo

My wife is driving with a friend and out 11-yr old god-daughter from our home in Sacramento down to San Diego, leaving Sunday evening. They expect to be near San Luis Obispo when it's time to pull over and go to sleep. Can anyone suggest a good, interesting, fun or otherwise worthy hotel/motel/inn/b&b in the area?

I hate to ask 2 questions in one day, but you are all so very helpful! Please forgive me.

This is just off the top of my head -- I've never been there but I see it every time I drive through the area:
The Madonna Inn
(nothing to do with the pop singer)

The Madonna Inn in kitschy to the nth degree. At least stop to use the bathrooms.

On our honeymoon last year, my wife and I spent the night at Avila Beach, which is a neat little town a little south of SLO that's recently been rebuilt after a toxic sludge cleanup (or something like that). We stayed at the Inn at Avila Beach, which I highly recommend, though it is a bit overpriced; we got our room through Hotwire.com for half the going rate.

This might not be quite what you're looking for, but Sycamore Mineral Springs is a great place in SLO.
