Novel about teen inventing his own gangsta past?

trying to remember a book about an urban teenager with acting/dramatic talent who moves to rural Oregon. He invents a gangster past history for himself to impress the local kids, who then take it upon themselves to become 'gangsta'. The title is something like 'And The Shadows Overtook Him', but Google does nothing.

I'm trying to use it for my classes, would loive to find it. Saw it in Borders a year or so ago? Help! Thanks.
