Where can I find a film from the 70's I saw in school?

Here's the plot:

Two men make a bet whether or not one of them can live completely isolated for one year. Large sum of money involved. The guy in solitary can have anything he wants: books, music, food but no news or periodicals. There is a phone in the room. If the guy gives up all he has to do is pick up the phone.

The man comes desperately close to going insane but at the brink he pulls himself back and cleans up, starts reading, learning piano, etc. and wins the bet.

I'd like to know the title and if it is available on DVD or download anywhere.

It sounds like a film adaptation of Anton Chekhov's short story "The Bet". Previously.

I searched and could not find info about this film, but I remember seeing it in school as well. It is based on Anton Chekhov's story, "The Bet". Black and white, and very arty.
