Multiple blogs

I'm looking for a CMS/blog that allows for multiple "installations" to be maintained through one control panel and also allows me to add custom fields.

I want to adapt a CMS/blog to keep track of separate project logs that can be maintained by one user in an office environment. I don't want to do separate installs because that means the person has to keep logging in to different control panels. I should also mention that I can't use Movable Type because I am using MAMP to run these logs locally on Mac OS X and I haven't figured out how to install MT (because of Perl). Hence something with a PHP backend.

Drupal does multiple sites. My love/hate for Drupal is well known. YMMV.

Drupal can do this.

Drupal lets you run multiple sites from one Drupal install. I'm pretty sure you can also set up multiple installs that share logins. Drupal has project-related modules (plug-ins) like Tasklist and Project. You can use the Content Construction Kit (CCK) to add custom fields.

Drupal uses PHP.

From your description, it sounds like you could simply utilize the built-in categories system in WordPress to do this. Your different project logs would be organized like http://domain.com/project1/ and http://domain.com/project2/ (you'll have to use a plugin like this to simply the URL this way, though).

I work with the Movable Type team, and we've all got MT running on our Macs, so we can definitely help with getting the Perl prerequisites installed if you need. If you're still stuck, feel free to drop me an email or IM me at "anildash" and I can hook you up with folks who can troubleshoot this for you. Or hang out in our forums or IRC channel or mailing lists -- most people in all these communities are running MT in exactly the environment you describe.
