Who wrote this book?

Trying to figure out the title and author of a sci-fi book I read years ago, involving an (Inca|Aztec) temple's golden items really being a collection of nanomachines, and these nanomachines, in large numbers, can change humans into otherworldly creatures when submerged in them...except one of the characters is brought back to life by these things at the end of the book without being transformed. Who wrote this, and what's the title?

Best answer: James Rollins, Excavation

I didn't really enjoy it . . . . . but I remember it ;)
