iTunes won't delete duplicates from source folder

How come iTunes refuses to remove/trash duplicate files even when I tell it to delete them from the original folder?

I imported all my music from a desktop to my new laptop.

I imported all of it into iTunes. There's a ton of duplicate songs, probably because on my desktop, where space isn't an issue, I've periodically/accidentally re-loaded some old files from storage on a external HDD.

In iTunes, after highlighting the duplicates, and deleting them, and telling iTunes to remove them from the iTunes folder (not just the iTunes menu), they still don't disappear, so I can't free up all the space. I have run a duplicate finder on the source folder but it still misses a ton.

Any advice? Thanks.

You may need to repair permissions. I use BatCHmod.
