On-line calendar?

I need an on-line calendar to keep my large theatrical cast (10 principals, 30 orchestra, up to 15 tech-designers-directors) up to date on rehearsal/production. Okay freestanding, although we do have a website (website is currently not interactive and has no "members" section). Any suggestions?

Saw posts here re Google Apps, but haven't heard good things about it in the local theatrical community.

What bad things have you heard about Google's calendar? (you can use the plain Google Calendar for this, you don't need to use Google Apps). To make it real easy on the people consuming you calendar, you can embed a live copy of the calendar on your website assuming you don't mind the public at large to view your calendar.

I use Backpack, and also 30Boxes.

Backpack won't be free for that many people though. But it's an awesome app. If you just need a calendar use Google. Cut and paste one line of code and you can embed it onto your web site.

I'm in a production of Fiddler On The Roof right now and the director just sent out a calendar using Apple's iCal. I know nothing about iCal, but he sent a web link to a calendar I can see and I assume the rest of the cast can see it also.

I used Google Calendar for a recent production of A Streetcar Named Desire I directed. Worked out really well, and you can embed it in any webpage.

Google Calendar has really improved over the last few months. And most people have a gmail account and can access.

Google Calendar is the best calendar app out there. It's great. So many possibilities and so versatile.

Response by poster: I'll have to get the production manager to share more specifically her objections to Google Calendar. From looking through the "tour" it seems to need gmail-- will it work with other email programs? We use Squirrel Mail.

You'll need a GMail account to setup and maintain the calendar but then you can take that calendar and embed it on your website where everyone who can view the website will be able to view the calendar.

Response by poster: This needs to be available only to staff-cast-tech, not to the general public. Would embedding it on the website be possible with a portion of the site password-access only? (Don't know if our web guy will let us do that. And I know, why is our web guy setting the rules. Don't ask.)

If you had a password protected portion of your website than yes you could embed the calendar there.
