A coffee cup refresh icon?

Mac question. In Safari, A coffee cup icon with two curved arrows comes up when I can't see a certain type of image (kind of like a refresh icon with a coffee cup in the middle). In Firefox they show up as a grey outlined box with a red X on the left hand side.
What am I missing here? Do I need to download something to be able to see these images? Are these images nonexistent?
Help!

That icon actually represents a Java applet. They can take a minute or two to load in some cases, depending on the speed of your computer and internet connection. If they just won't load, try running Software Update from the top-left apple-icon menu to make sure your Java VM is up-to-date.

That coffee cup is a nice cup of Java.
Don't know what version of Safari you're using, but try:
Safari menu (top left) > Preferences > Security > Enable Java.

Response by poster: I have OS X.
Java and javascript are turned on.
Software Update doesn't have a new Java update.
Java is in the Utilities folder as Java 5. I guess they could be Java 6, but we are talking about simple physics problem answer keys.

Is it a publicly available site? If we can see it without needing to login, we can check to see if it's OS X or the site.

Sometimes websites have a bad java applet in there, that you can't see. If you really care to see what's going on, it is possible to view the Java console. I think you can view it by opening up Console in utitlities, then choosing File > Open Quickly > ~Library/Logs > Java Console.log
That will give you debugging if the applet isn't loading for some reason. Then you can cut and paste the results here, and we may be able to help you figure out what's going on.

From the way you describe the appearance in Firefox, I think it's a Java applet that failed to start for some reason.
Have you checked that you can run Java applets in Firefox/Safari? The specific applet that's displaying like this may well just be broken.

And if your Java is indeed borked, you can download it from Apple

Are you running OS X Tiger (10.4) or Leopard (10.5)? To check that you have Java, go to Applications > Utilities > Java. If it's there, it's possible the Java applet you're trying to load is Java 6 when OS X currently only supports Java 5.
