Any good film/movie forums?

I can't seem to find anybody to talk about films with on the internet. The few movie forums I've found are riddled with "the film was awesome", "oh man, I can't wait to see it" and "this movie sucks."

What do you do when you've just seen a great film and want to have a mature conversation about it involving story arch, editing, lighting, acting, symbolism?

On the internet, though.

One possibility is the Criterion Forum (warning: pretension).

Have you checked out the Vine at Rottentomatoes.com? If you've got stuff to get off your chest about movies, you could always create your own blog and invite discussion.

I cant speak for quality since I've never used it, but Aint-It-Cool-News has a chat and forum section and they're the biggest film nerds on the planet. CHUD has something similar - again cant speak for quality, I only know it exists.

Girish has interesting film posts, with consistently thought-provoking discussions in the comments which frequently branch off from the main discussion, and many of the sites linked in his sidebar are worth the attention. I think most of those are blogs rather than forums, but the level of discourse fits what you're looking for and someone at Girish' place (if not the man himself) could undoubtedly point you in the right direction if the presupplied topics aren't to your liking.

Mobius Home Video Forums is - in my opinion - the best web forum devoted to movies. High quality discussion on arthouse films, film noir, direct to video productions, experimental, asian action films, and on and on. You have to register under your own name there - so no one can hide behind anonymity. The board just released its annual and unofficial "Best of 2007" film and dvd poll (submitters are encouraged to write about their choices) and is sure to provide some fodder for you Netflix queue.

A BB still exists with some of the old regulars hanging in, johngoren.

Those were good days... *sniff*

The news forum/talk-back for Ain't It Cool News is probably the worst possible suggestion to this question. Absolute lowest common denominator drivel. Every post will begin with 'Frist!!!!' and goes downhill from there. Avoid.

IMDB is not much better. (Example of topic: The Shining isn't scary because not that many people die in it and it's boring.)

xixax.xom was ok, but died on its feet a few years back (unless it's been resurrected recently)

Turner Classic Movies has a great forum.

Agreed that the talk-backs on AICN aren't great. Lotsa snark, and not that amusing, either.

Plug for my friend's blog at Amoeba. He's a film nut.

Here's my Pepsi Blue moment. I'm putting together a film discussion board, Filmish.Net. It's tag-based film discussion, which draws the discussion toward particular aspects of the film, to avoid the "everyone who likes that movie is a moron" type comments. It's a closed alpha, but I'm certainly willing to add more people if they MeFi Mail me.
