Fun, free multiplayer games?

Me and a couple of friends enjoy playing Grand Theft Auto 2 online. It's a freely available nowadays, and it's good, uncomplicated fun. Can you recommend any similar multiplayer games, preferably free?
Now, a few of my friends have a thing against fantasy/scifi themed games, but if the gameplay is good, it doesn't really matter. It should be fast-paced, and it should work on medium-spec PCs. Any ideas?
