What is this quote about heroes from?

Help me identify a quote about "woe to the society that needs a hero."

I don't really remember how the quote goes... But the first part is someone exclaiming about "how we need a hero for our times" and then someone remarking about "woe to the society that needs a hero." To be honest, this might be entirely wrong, in terms of the wording, but I do remember reading something like it somewhere. Sorry to be so incredibly vague.

Best answer: it is from the play Galileo by Bertolt Brecht. But I suspect it might be older

A friend: Unhappy is the land that lacks a hero.
Galileo: No, unhappy is the land that needs a hero.

TheOtherGuy nailed it. I remember reading this for German A-level, now that takes me back.

The original German is "Unglücklich das Land, das Helden nötig hat!"
