Is there a tool to strip out silent places in a .wav file, or does it have to be done manually?

I recorded a wav file from a MiniDisc onto my laptop - the MD player is getting crotchety and there's extended periods of silence throughout the recording. Is there any tool that can strip out these places where there's no signal recorded? Or do I need to do it by hand (using Audacity)?

The problem you may find is that the tracks then run right into each other so the manual method may be best.
If you like audacity you may also want to take a look at rezound . I have been playing with both for minidisc recorded sound and find them equally useful.
