Drinks at the Mark

How should Mr. p and I dress for dinner at the Top of the Mark?
Is a little satin dress on a Saturday night overdoing it? Should Mr. p wear a suit?

Response by poster: I was just telling Mr. p that you would know, ikkyu2. I appreciate the dancing advice- I was going to wear unbearably high heels.
If you go next Saturday night, I'll be the one in pink.

Agreeing with ikkyu2. I've been there on Saturday nights and its a mixed crowd. Dress as you want. There will be men walking around tuxes, women with slinky formal gowns. There will also be a few out-of-towners who took the elevator up from their hotel room and are still wearing their tourist outfits. But mostly formal, I'd say. You can't overdress.

My mom & I dropped in wearing more or less nice (touristy) street clothes late afternoon / early evening once and actually didn't feel too underdressed (we were prepared to be turned away).

I've been there in totally casual clothes and didn't feel uncomfortable at all. But then I never worry about dress codes. However, you certainly won't feel overdressed.
Please order a large gin and tonic while you're there. They cost the earth but they come in a pint glass. Good times!

I took some pictures when I went, you can analyze the crowd here. I wouldn't worry about it too much. The bar seemed to be a place where younger women could pick up older, umm, clients.

Top of the Mark is enough of a landmark that you see people dressed in the whole range from casual to formal. No staff is going to give you a hard time about what you're wearing and at the same time, it's dark and the tables are separated far apart enough that no one is going to care.
However, for the fun of looking nice in a welcoming environment, I like dressing up when going to nicer places like Top of the Mark. If you'd like to see Mr. P in a suit, egg him on with your hot little satin dress!

Mod note: a few comments removed -- this thread is really not a good place to argue about the idea of dress codes or argue with other posters. try again? thank you.

Ok, I wanted to be sure this was in SF before commenting.... I've been there in just jeans and a t-shirt, and they were more than happy to serve us. I think, as long as you have money and won't scare anyone away, they won't much care.
That said, it's a very nice place: a suit and tie or a nice dress would fit in very nicely.

There's music on Saturday night; you may want to dance, so wear danceable clothes and shoes.
