Do you know of a place open today (New Year's Day) in Los Angeles where I can adopt a cat?

I'm located in the San Fernando Valley but am willing to drive.

Have you tried craigslist? There is usually an abundance of animals listed.

Can I ask why today is THE day?

no responsible agency will let you adopt same day. however, people who run ads for free animals are different, and usually judge on "vibes." in which case, Craigslist is your best bet.

i'm in the process of adopting a new cat, myself. went to the shelter yesterday, and have to get my other cat updated on his shots before they'll let me take her home. (that means it will have taken four days, though it could have been three.) if New Year's hadn't been this week, i think i could have gotten her next day, if i'd had the updated kitty credentials.

Yes, um...I hope you aren't asking because you want a meal for a snake or something.

Response by poster: Today is the day because I have the day off and can drive around looking at cats!

Response by poster: Here's the followup for the skillions of people who will be trying to adopt cats on New Year's Day in years to come.

I found this place open - the LA Cat Connection! Their cattery is under construction, so most of their cats are being fostered at the moment. I got to meet some of their cats at the vet next door, but they were sick (which is why they were at the vet instead of being fostered.) They were willing to do same day adoptions or fostering, but I didn't feel comfortable taking a sick kitty away from the vet's office.

It turned out that I was able to get some time off yesterday too (January 2) so I went to the Pasadena Humane Society and the Burbank Animal Shelter. I ended up getting a totally totally sweet 6-year-old grey and white shorthair female from the Burbank shelter. She is hanging out with me right now!

Both the Pasadena Humane Society and the Burbank Animal Shelter are nice facilities. The Pasadena one is a lot bigger. Both were willing to do same-day adoptions.

I was going to make a joke about feeding my snake, but I figured not everyone would get it, and I would get angry emails. So here's my substitute joke:

A "weekend"? What's that? NEVER HEARD OF IT.
