Is it possible to connect the new psp slim to a wireless network using a belkin 802.11g router?

Response by poster: I should also note that I'm on XP home edition. I'm doing it as a favor for my little bro. It was his Christmas present.

Yes.

Is there something that's not working that you haven't mentioned? You should be able to connect to it just like any laptop or PC would.

Check to see if your router is in G-only mode. If so, change it to Mixed mode so that both -G and -B devices can connect (google "psp g-only" if you want more details).

Response by poster: No, it's not working at all. I set up the wireless network a couple of months back ( in a failed effort to network some old computers). Then, I packed it back up. Now, Since I couldn't afford to buy any games for my bro, I'm trying to set it up again so he can do something with it.

I read that wireless G is backwards compatible so I figured it should work, even though the psp uses Wireless b. Just as I gave up yesterday I found the printout of the network settings i did when I first set it up, which prompted me to unpack and set it up yet again. I entered all the info on the PSP's network infrastructure options and it still doesn't work. I guess I'll have to scrap the settings somehow and re-setup the network. ..i hate computers.... thanks for your replies guys.

So, just to clarify here, your router can operate in G or B+G mixed mode. There are two options because it's faster to make the router use G only when you have only G enabled stuff on your network. If you set your router up in B+G mode, then your PSP will be able to talk to it.

If you set up wireless security, which you ought to, then you will need to make sure you use a kind of encryption that the PSP is also able to use. The PSP supports WEP, WPA-PSK (TKIP) and WPA-PSK (AES). It's a good idea to use one of the WPA modes, whichever your router supports. If your router has both, then AES is stronger than TKIP.

Try it first with no encryption, and then when that is working try it again with security. In case you have forgotten how to manage your router, you can press and hold the reset button on the back of it for about 5-10 seconds (this says 7, but I don't know if it applies for your model). After that, the router will be back to default settings, which will be described in the manual that came with it. You can also probably download your manual from Belkin. The Belkin support page is here, and the PSP manual is online here.

Giving up is no fun, and computers will always do what you tell them to, if you tell 'em right. Bust out those manuals, and this problem will go away.

Response by poster: nothing on the manual (which is on a cd) indicates B+G mixed mode, but, since this router is indeed backwards compatible I guess they felt no need to mention it. The encryption is WPA_PSK (TKIP). However, I was hesitant to chew another 3 1/2 hours of free time over this. I'll keep trying though, thanks for your boost in morale, goodwill to you and yours tracert.

Page 45, if the model you linked is right.

The setting you want is on the "Channel and SSID" page under the Wireless section in the web management utility that's at the address 192.168.2.1 by default. After everything is hooked up and your computer has acquired an IP from the router, put that into your browser to get to it. The default password should be blank.

If you have a Version 4xxx, then you will have the options "g and b", "g only" and "b only". If you have a Version 1xxx you will have the options "802.11g-Auto Mode", "802.11g-Only Mode", and "802.11g-LRS mode".

You want it to be "g and b" or "802.11g-Auto Mode". Make sure "Protected Mode" and "Turbo" mode are disabled if you see them. As a last resort, if things still aren't working out, try "b only" or "802.11g-LRS". If you are not broadcasting your SSID, remember, it's case sensitive when you put it into the PSP.

But, at 3 1/2 hours, I might give up for a while, too.

Response by poster: I'm having trouble accessing the web management utility. but I was able to just yesterday. This may be because I ran the easy install wizard from the CD that came with the router. It was a half-assed attempt and I did not complete the steps, nor did i proceed properly i suspect.

I didn't reset the router before I ran the easy install wizard, so I think the whole thing might be kaputz.Or it might be my browser(I tried both Firefox and IE) is trying to put "http//:" in front of the numbers when i enter them in the address bar.

I hope that's not the case because that's a whole nother can of worms. I have to find out how to properly reset the thing and start from scratch following the instructions to a T since now I know it's possible. You are correct about those settings, It's all there on page 45. Thanks again tracert.

Don't worry about your browser, "http://192.168.2.1/" is just fine. Reset and have another go, but don't use that CD, it's just trouble.
