What is your opinion of Takoma Park Elementary School in Montgomery Co, Maryland?
If no-one on mefi has direct experience to share with you, I suggest you contact their PTO. I am sure they would be happy to help -- PTOs are wonderful for this sort of thing.

I can't speak for Takoma Park ES, but I can recommend my alma mater, N-CC. Since it is technically a magnet school I think your child might be able to enroll even if you don't live in the right district. Only grades 3-6, though.
My good friend attended the Spanish Immersion Program at Rolling Terrace, and had a positive experience.

I can't speak to this school in particular, but I can say that as a proud alumnus I think the Montgomery County Public Schools are among the best anywhere. Lots of non-alums would agree Takoma Park is (or was, in the late 1980s) a kind of hippieish and tree-lined inner suburb, very pleasant. I'm pretty sure the whole area is served by Montgomery Blair HS, which has an excellent magnet program that brings a lot of resources into the school.

So weird. I just got back from dinner with a second grade teacher who works there! She said it is a great school. Each grade has 9 classes/sections (it is only K-2). Each class is only about 15-16 students. She said that without a doubt she would send her own child there. Montgomery County in general is pretty wealthy, and it shows in the school system.

There are some reviews on Great Schools.net -- link.
Also, you can find out how the school scored by going to the Maryland Report Card (link) and clicking on the school's name[*]. For instance, the school met Adequate Yearly Progress (towards NCLB standards) last year and has a student population that is 1/3 white, 1/3 black, and 1/3 other.
