Hiking Long Distances

The Pilgrimage of St James, also known as the Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela - involves walking for about 800km across northern spain. I've seen a few faq's online, but what i'd really like is some advice from a fellow mefite who has actually done all or part of this trail.
Also, some general advice on hiking very long distances would be appreciated also.

i haven't done it, but have always been fascinated by the idea...this site has great info and stories about it...also, Shirley Maclaine did it, and wrote a book about it. This is good too, from the NYT

Response by poster: thanks very much amberglow, for some reason my hack handed googling never found that site at all, which is the best i've seen by a long shot.

I'm doing the trail at end of august, any other advice or accounts would be very welcome.
