Where is the firefox X tab extension?
October 23, 2007 12:41 PM   Subscribe

Do you know which Firefox extension it is that moves the X to the far right on each tab?

I had this extension (or possible option I haven't refound) on another machine. I want to have the Xs all be in the far right side, on each tab, as you close them. That is instead of them being wherever the small tab is.

Thanks in advance.

Tab Mix Plus will do it, along with a ton of other tab-related things.

Tab Mix Plus gives you an X at the right end of the tab bar. I can't quite tell if that's what you're looking for.

Tab X used to do this, but it hasn't worked with my last few Firefox updates. I don't even know if it's still updated.

If you want to avoid extensions, point your web browser to about:config, go to Preference Name browser.tabs.closeButtons, and change the value to 1.

jmd82's solution works for me - no extension needed

Response by poster: I didn't explain myself well. I'm looking for the one that makes one X appear on the uppermost tab on the far right. As you close tabs, the X is on the next one on the far right of the window.

Best answer: I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.8 without any extensions, and it already does this.

I'm looking at Firefox as I write this, and I'm sorry to say that I have no idea what you mean.

In Firefox 1.5, each tab has its own red X button.

In Firefox 2.0, there is just one red X button on the far right side.

It sounds like you are running Firefox 1.5, and should upgrade to 2.0

Response by poster: I just downloaded 2.8 and it does what I need.

I wanted the x in the same place regardless of what tab I was on. It seems the pain meds from my surgery are making me have a hard time stating what I mean.

(I was running 2.7, before this)

2.0.0.7 has the X on each tab. It's just greyed on non-focused tabs.

Woah. I'm using FF 2.0.0.8 and it has the X's on each individual tab, greyed on non-focus like the emperor. I'd far prefer it with one x affecting all tabs. And I don't want to monkey with any damn extensions.

Anyone?

By the way, if you center-click anywhere on the tab, it closes it. You don't have to use the X. (IE7 does the same.)

Best answer: dirtdirt, type about:config into the address bar, find the browser.tabs.closeButtons preference, and change the value to 3.

This has never worked for me. Mine is set to "3" but I still get the x's on each individual tab. I hate this and would love it get it back to the way it was before upgrading

FYI, pressing CTRL and W at the same time will close the tab you're on. (Or CMD and W if you're on a Mac.)

Best answer: RoseovSharon, this says that it won't work if you have the TabMixPlus extension installed.

desjardins: Aha, that explains it! Sure enough, I turned it off and now my beloved one x to rule them all is back. Many thanks, I'd mark ya best answer if I could...
