Open source web framework/document management system?

I'm looking for something sorta like plone or drupal, but that supports structured documents (e.g. per an XML DOM or something similar) and allows for component-wise searching of those documents.

The specific situation is that we would like to experiment with posting research papers from researchers working in a similar domain in a "smart" way (relative to standard journal publication.) so beyond the documents simply being text-searchable or associated with keywords, we'd like to apply some semantic structure to them.

Thus, for example, if you wanted to search for studies which have cohorts in the age range of 65-85, of Irish descent, and female, the system would facilitate that easily. Bonus points if the query mechanism itself is dynamically generated based on a DOM, so that if I add a property like "education_level" to the object "cohort", a widget corresponding to that property is added to the search tool.

So is there an open source, web-based solution to this problem? Something fairly useable and pretty?

Closest I've seen to this is Semantic MediaWiki. Really, you're describing kind of a holy grail!

You can get something similar to this in Drupal using Content Construction Kit and views.
