how do i find a web designer i like?

How do I find a good web designer in the ny/nj area? I'm specifically looking for a talented individual or firm to design an entertainment/ news site with CMS. I work in graphic design, so I'm a bit picky. All the portfolios I've searched have been pretty horrible. Any suggestions as to where or how I can better search what I'm looking for? I'm willing to spend 10K give or take half that ammount.

Have you checked out sites like cssgallery for portfolio browsing?

Can you give examples of the level of design you're looking for?

Talk to my friend Craig Phares. He's a really great web designer and graphic designer, and I think he's pretty comfortable with development.

Response by poster: I like general functionality and layout of www.Lawrence.com

I like the simple layout and use of a calendar feature from www.experiencejax.com/.

I like the way member comments are handled on www.gawker.com

go to an aiga nyc event, ideal place for networking. or, if you want to spend money, hire someone who has been at a place like R/GA. you can find a bunch via linkedin (search for R/GA and check out their websites).

Don't hire an individual, hire a partnership or group. In my experience it is very very rare for excellent design and excellent programming to be in a single person.
