What is this late-night HBO movie based on a true story?

In April (or May....or March) of this year, there was a movie on one of the expanded HBO channels around 2 or 3 in the morning. I don't think it was one of those type of movies, but it might be. The plot basically revolved around a group of high school kids from California who were into drugs and other nefarious activities, and ended up killing their good friend (more inside)...

One of the boys in the group hated another guy in their group that was more successful in life (I believe he was also going into the Army). They were good friends growing up. The first boy ends up talking his friends into helping him kill the second boy. They kill him and dump his body into a lake or a swamp of some sort, and the body is later found and all of the kids are arrested and sent to prison. It was based on a true story, and the film was produced in the mid-late 90s/early 00s. I checked on HBO's movie catalogs, but they only show what is on the main channel. Please help!!

Best answer: Details are a little off, but it sounds like Bully.

No, the details are all right and that's definitely it. (I watched it recently & posted about it too, but to ask why there was a lollipop in the glove box).

If you like that movie, I'd suggest The Chumscrubber which came out before bully and had a better plot.

yeah, or River's Edge, which is somewhat similar and as a bonus has Mr. Insane Man, er, i mean, Crispin Glover as the main character.

Or Alpha Dog, which has your man Justin Timberlake in it.

Or Heavenly Creatures, which is a sadly underrated pre-LOTR Peter Jackson film.

Bully came out about 4 years before The Chumscrubber.
