Indian cooking staples in NYC?

Best place in New York City to buy Indian staples like ghee and garam masala?

I'm happy to travel anywhere in the five boroughs (Jackson Heights, etc.) but a friendly staff that could help out a beginner is a definite plus.

If you're in Manhattan, there are great shops that offer anything I've ever needed for Indian recipes, on 1st Avenue between 5th and 7th Streets.

Kalustyan's has every Indian spice or condiment imaginable. It's on Lex.

I second Kalustyan's. They also own a restaurant down the street called Curry Leaf, quite good.

You can make ghee pretty easily, it's probably a lot cheaper.

Thirding Kalustyan's -- more convenient to get to than Jackson Heights if you're in Manhattan, and while they're helpful, the place is generally laid out simply enough that you probably won't even need the assist.

Lexington Ave between 26th and 30th streets. Several stores, including the aforementioned Kalustyan's
