Mix-and-match bathing suit sizes?
June 25, 2007 2:01 PM   Subscribe

Mrs. Windphone wears one bathing suit size on top and another on the bottom. We're looking for a store or website that will let you mix and match sizes — or buy bathing suit tops and bottoms separately — and so far we've been coming up empty-handed. Any suggestions?

(Bonus points if they sell a boyshort-style bathing suit bottom.)

J. Crew will let you mix and match and has boyshort bottoms...

My girlfriend has been very pleased with Venus Swimwear. You can mix and match and their return policy is great.

I just bought swim bottoms from EMS (and I got board shorts, too!) and a top from the Gap. Both fit happily.

Old Navy fits the bill perfectly.

Land's End lets you mix and match but I don't see any boyshorts available. I've bought swimwear from them and the customer service was excellent.

I think Target has seperate tops and bottoms.

This used to be tricky, and then it seems like a few years ago mix-and-match became all the rage. I've seen suits for sale like this at Target, local just-bathing-suit stores, Lord & Taylor, and, as previously mentioned, J Crew and Old Navy.

Poppi Swim lets you mix & match various cute retro styles, and they have boy shorts. (They also had friendly customer service at the local Portland store when I misplaced the boyshorts I'd bought and thought they hadn't put them in my bag; I got a replacement pair for free, then sheepishly returned them a few hours later when I found the first pair.)

Victoria's Secret does this, and they have boyshort styles too.

H&M, H20 and Victoria's Secret (not all shops have the swimsuits, but they are online) sell the tops & bottoms separately.

Old Navy fits the bill perfectly.

But only if you have the tits of a 13 year old.

Nordstrom lets you do this, even in-store. Disclaimer: it's been a few years since I've bought a swimsuit from Nordstrom, but I can't imagine they've changed their policies.

Sunsets swimwear is a great, high-quality bathing suit brand that sells separate tops and bottoms. There are lots of styles of both tops and bottom to choose from, including boy shorts. Basically, you pick one of their fabric styles and then choose the separates that you like.

Sunsets is sold in higher-end swim suit stores, but they're also available on-line. We (my daughter and I) usually go to a store to see what size we wear, and then order online if we don't find waht we like in the fabric (or style) we want.

I think this is pretty common these days, but I know specifically that Target also lets you do this. In fact, you don't even have to buy the matching bottoms/tops. (Go crazy! Stripes with plaids!)

Thirding Target. I'm a big woman and not only did I find stuff that fitted well, it looked ok and was a good price.

I find it difficult to purchase a 2-piece as a set anymore - it seems everywhere sells them separately so you can mix-n-match. Are there some constraints in your search?

Every department store I've been to tends to sell tops and bottoms separately - from Target to JC Penny to Macy's to the higher end places. Often they'll have mix-and-match styles in the same colors and patterns, so you can have your pick of triangle bikini, halter, tankini, etc. in any size, along with boyshorts, string bikini, low-cut, etc. in any other size. Hit up your local mall, and see what the big stores are carrying.

I'll second H&M. Their pieces are both cute and classic, affordable, and you can mix and match. I got my first two-piece there a couple years ago (ten bucks apiece for a black halter-style top and black boy shorts) and I've been really happy with it.

I have the same issue and Newport News is where I've been looking. I got my last suit there, separate tankini pieces.

Target and Kohl's both do this, and I've gotten bathing suits from both places.
