What are these little wingless red and black beetles in my driveway?

There are a couple hundred of them swarming a roughly 1.5 meter radius in my driveway. Said driveway is in central Virginia.
The beetle on the rock is just under an inch long.

I can't tell from just a description, but maybe you'll find something to help you on this page.

Best answer: Boxelder bug nymphs.

BTW. I was easy to identify. First I noticed that it was a true bug (like stink bugs) not a beetle, and a nymph (undeveloped wings). So a google image search for bug nymph turned it up on the first page.
