Dad's in Town and I'm Graduating from School Pale Ale.

What should I name my beer?

I am making beer with my father when he comes to visit. It will be an india pale ale.

I would like the name to somehow reference either a) the fact that the beer was made with my dad; or b) the fact that it is being made close to my graduation from school.

And I would like the name to be fantastically witty. My dad has made a number of beers with fantastically witty names, and I would like to keep with that tradition.

But I am totally drawing a blank. Metafilter?

don't have a full name, but given that it's an ipa, you could take advantage of the fact that "pop's" and "hops" rhymes.
posted by AaRdVarK at 7:38 AM on April 28, 2007

For the Seuss reference, you could go with Hops on Pop.

Based on the fact that you will shortly be (sort of) competing with your father in the world of work, I suggest "Move over, Gramps".

"Fallen Acorn"
You know...that whole "the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree" thing?"

I've always heard 'The apple doesn't fall far from the tree'. Never heard it as acorn. Weird.

That's a tough one. I like the hops/pops idea. How about Hops & Pops? Hard to work the graduation theme in there. I'm thinking latin? "In Hops We Trust?" Rhyming Dads with Grads is a bit trite and overworked this time of year. Maybe it can be about the label. Throw in a graduation hat and the year on the label and it'll remind you guys of this time.

Hops, Pops & Circumstance

although Pops is pretty far off from Pomp. oh well, just an idea.

I just got this in my email...

Howdy, Long time MiFi lurker here. I have a suggestion for jennyjenny, whoasked about naming an IPA, here: http://ask.metafilter.com/61527/Dads-in-Town-and-Im-Graduating-from-School-Pale-Ale I never do this (who likes unsolicited e-mail?), but I was just soimpressed by my own cleverness when I read Jenny's question that Ijust had to tell someone. You were the first responder to have listedan e-mail in your profile, thus this message is heading to you. Feelfree to post it if you like (no need to worry about attribution), andif not, no big deal. My suggestions:

Graduated Cylinder, which I am not particularly fond of, but would becool for a science major.

And this one, which I *am* particularly fond of, if this person has agood relationship with her dad and would like to razz him a little bitat the same time: Higher Earning

Thanks for your time and my apologies for the unsolicited e-mail. p

Actually, make that "Old Grad Dad" which would be a takeoff of Old Grandad bourbon.
posted by gfrobe at 9:58 AM on April 28, 2007

I love gfrobe's, but would modify it slightly:

Old Dad's Grad.
posted by jamjam at 10:11 AM on April 28, 2007

jamjam, it's an IPA, not a Pilsner.
posted by dirtynumbangelboy at 10:12 AM on April 28, 2007

dnab, I did look around a bit, and I decided
While pilsener is best defined in terms of its characteristics and heritage, the term is also used by some brewers (particularly in North America) to indicate their "premium" beer, whether or not it has a particular hop character.
was just enough to allow me my alliteration.
posted by jamjam at 10:29 AM on April 28, 2007

Fair enough, but I have an issue with that. It's like calling any sparkling wine a Champagne. It's not, unless it's from Champagne. Ditto balsamic vinegar--it's not balsamic if it's just regular inegar with colour and sweetener added.

Did your dad pay for your school? If so, Forbearance IPA might work. I also like Old Dad's Grad.

Ditaig IPA. When people ask you what it means, you can say it's an old gaelic word for when Dad's in Town and I Graduated.

4.0 IPA and IPA-ter are the most clever, but for some reason, I like jennyjenny beerbeer the best (probably for its potential to become fuel for a hilarious drunken song and dance)
posted by carmen at 2:53 PM on April 28, 2007

4.0 IPA is hands-down the best.

Response by poster: I have a few favorites at this point -- I'm going to sweeten the pot a bit. The winner, as decided by me and my pop, gets a six-pack sent to them, should they wish and the laws of their state allow.

Front runners at this point, in no particular order:

Hops, Pops & Circumstance
Didn't Fail Ale
4.0 IPA

I love Metafilter.
posted by jennyjenny at 3:14 PM on April 28, 2007

I vote for (in order)

4.0 IPA
Didn't Fail Ale

Hops, Pops is just... meh.

And now you need to think about label art/design...
posted by dirtynumbangelboy at 3:50 PM on April 28, 2007

Response by poster: Yeah, if someone comes up with a really killer label/name combo, they could get a six-pack too!
posted by jennyjenny at 3:58 PM on April 28, 2007

Well, the nerdy kids today take AP classes and get GPA's well above 4.0. Maybe it could be something like 4.8 IPA, where 4.8 is the alcohol percentage. Your beer's percentage is probably higher than that, but if not then the double meaning would be great.

If you're the Jenny I'm thinking of:

Tadpole Island Pale Ale

And if you are, congrats! Your dad was both an awesome interview subject and a great brewer (though the last homebrewer's meeting I went to, your beer was better than his).

Other ideas:

Pater Noster Humulus (Our Father's Hops)
