Saving / Redirecting IE history by user?

Redirecting or relocating the settings for Shell Folders and User Shell Folders for Internet Explorer in such a way that they are separated out by username?

We have established a Windows 2003 server as a domain server, with remote access through a VPN.

The clients are Windows XP professional PC's that are authenticating with the DC, but not using the remote network gateway for Internet access.

These PC's also have the Microsoft Shared Public Computing software on them, which uses a drive protection script to prevent/ remove any changes to the C: drive.

What we would like to do is, through the use of either a .reg file or a login script, change the location of the Shell Folders/ User Shell Folders for Internet Explorer history/ cache, etc, to a secondary partition on the drive, so that we can still track the Internet usage on the machines. (i.e. D:\IEcache\)

We have tried using a standard .reg file, changing the location of the history, etc to D:\Temp\%USERNAME%\history, etc. The result that this yields is a single folder in D:\Temp named literally %USERNAME%, to which all users cache, history, etc, are written.

So the question is, does anyone know another way to redirect or relocate the settings for Shell Folders and User Shell Folders in such a way that they are separated out by username? We can't seem to figure out a way to do it using a script or GPO, and doing so as each individual user is not possible.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
