Oh wait, Sacajawea wasn't a leader of a tribe. That'll teach me to read the question more carefully.

elouise cobell, treasurer of the blackfoot tribe, is the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the u.s. bureau of indian affairs for mismanaging trust assets for over 100 years, which if it ever goes to trial, could result in the biggest judgment in the history of litigation on this planet.

I should think Sacajawea counts toward the 'famous women or" part of the question though, amro.

Best answer: I don't know if this is what your after, but this dialogue between Susan Shown Harjo and some idiots at ESPN show her to be a strong leader.

Suzan Shown Harjo: Native Americans are not monolithic, so not all of us think any one thing. The overwhelming majority of us at this time in our history see the Cleveland symbol as Little Red Sambo -- an embarrassment and shame on its promoters.

R-Skin Fan: Are you drunk???

Suzan Shown Harjo: As a political and health decision, I don't drink at all. Alcohol is a powerful medicine that weakens natural healing medicines, so it's not a good idea to mix medicines. Thank you for asking.

Burn, R-skin Fan. Buuurrrrrrrnnnnn.

Well, if you count Hawaii, there was Queen Lydia Liliuokalani.

There have been a bunch in Canada, most notably Roberta Jamieson of the Six Nations band. Here's a pretty good list of them (in the last 50 years anyway.)
