Where do I buy a platform bed?

Help me find a queen sized bed.

I ordered this bed, but I canceled it because it's been on backorder for weeks. I want something with that very simple style -- wood, clean lines, not very ostentatious.

I need a bed that's either a platform bed or one that works with slats, because when I bought my mattress I didn't get a box spring. I do have a set of slats, so that doesn't have to be included.

I've seen West Elm's platform bed, but I've heard that it had problems with breaking, so I'm not sure about that one. Room and Board is a bit out of my reach right now. I don't like any of Ikea's beds, and most of the other brick and mortar stores nearby have beds that I hate.

I'm in the Chicago area but more than happy to buy online, if it's of good quality.

Looks like it'd be pretty easy to make.

That looks like something you could get at Ikea.

Get the Hopen bed from IKEA, just don't attach the headboard. Looks very close. There are definitely other designs at IKEA that would come even closer--again, just don't bother with the headboard.

Ask for a bunky board at any mattress store.
Its just upolstered plywood with purpose made legs.
Sturdy, simple, invisible and cheap.
Save on shipping too.

I'd check out Overstock.com ... I didn't look very hard, but I found this simple-looking platform bed, though it has storage underneath so I don't know if that interests you.

I also second Ikea.

I'm trying to find a good link to a Finnish design company, but it might take me a day or so. Until then, that bed you linked is absolutely gorgeous and, if I were you, I'd sleep on the floor until it arrives from backorder.

I had this same problem a few months ago. I found the Leksvik queen size bed frame at IKEA. It's just an antique-stained pine, not particularly hefty, but is attractive, has some nice hidden storage in the headboard, and is a step up from veneer and melamine. You can adjust it from 4" to 15+" mattress depths.

One caveat about IKEA frames, the slats are not included in the price of the bed! Make sure you pick up a set in the warehouse.

You could also try making your own frame.

I have the West Elm bed frame, and it actually seems quite well made. In the unlikly event that one of the supporting slats did break, it would be simple to replace. My husband and I are both on the heavy side, and we've had no problem whatsoever. I think it's one of the better buys from West Elm. It comes in a flatpack, too, so you can pick it up and save on shipping.

We have one of this West Elm bed. For the price/quality (surprisingly not horrible) it is simply not worth making one -- and I have a fully equiipped woodshop (just no time to make our own bed right now). The "blond" (natural finish white oak) looks good against our concrete floors. One caveat -- it is lower than many other platform beds. We're using it with a DWR Sonno mattress.

Elsewhere, we have a case study fast-back bed. Taller than the West Elm -- heavier also. And much more expensive. Lots of "air" beneath makes for a nice look when showing off the floor.

You might want to take a look at Dania and Domicile.

Dania has a big showroom in Northbrook, and Domicile in Lincolnwood. They both carry items very similar to what you showed. Though I don't see your bed on either site, there's more in stock than shown online.

I've been furniture shopping lately, and their prices are well within reach.

Maybe take a look at CB2? (It's the "younger, cooler cousin" to Crate and Barrel.) They have a pretty nice selection of beds, though not very many wood ones. This one isn't wood, but its look is minimalist in a way that seems similar to the bed you linked.

They're mostly online, but they have two brick-and-mortar stores in Chicago (you lucky duck).

If none of these suggestions float your boat, you might try asking at ApartmentTherapy.

If you're at all handy, you might want make a Readymade Bed-In-A-Box.

Ikea, Ikea, and Ikea. And if they don't have anything you like, look for other sellers of "Danish" and "Scandanavian" style furniture.

And if that doesn't work, see if somebody in your area sells tatami beds.

My boyfriend got a bed recently from Right On Futon that is very comfortable.

Response by poster: Thanks, everyone! You guys have given me lots to look at. Hopefully I won't be sleeping on the floor for much longer.
