Someone To Roof Over Me

Who would you recommend to redo my roof? I'm in Des Moines, IA. Price matters. Any other advise about roofing is gladly and thankfully accepted.

Are you friendly with your neighbors? Ask them who did their roofs.

A couple of things to think about:
- how long do you want the roof to last?
- are you planning on selling the house before the roof needs to be repaired again?
- do you want to go for standard shingles / recycled tires (really) / alternatives?

I'd echo the "talk to the neighbors" route.

Do you have a service similiar to Angie's List in your area?

My parents had their roof done a few years back. My dad had reshingled roofs several times, and thought he could do the house they moved to. But, all the old shingles needed to be removed. He spent a week on the roof one summer trying to get the shingles off before he gave up and called a roofer. The roofer took a look at the house and quoted an hourly rate to last for 3 days and two workers with a guarantee not to go above the initial quote. After they were on the roof for a day, they had to bring a special power tool to remove the shingles. Five days later they were STILL trying to get the shingles off. No one figured it would be so hard to get the old shingles off. Anyway, the roofer was good to his word about not going over the quote. I'll ask them who did it tomorrow.

Response by poster: FatGuy, that's sound thinking. It's not a neighborhood where it's safe to know everybody. Maybe I can break the ice with a few this way.

Alt F4, that's just the kind of advise I was hoping for. Thank you.

dgeiser13, I am unaware of anything like that here. Seems cool.

achmorrison, eegads! I can't even imagine what must have been holding those shingles down. I sure hope I don't have to deal with anything like that, but if I do, I want those roofers.

It looks like Angie's List is planning on coming to Des Moines soon. Whatever soon means.
