Board and Proc Compatibility Guide Mismatch -- OK anyway?

Intel Proc/MB compatibility: P4 HT Prescott 531 + BLKDP965LTCK = Don't match compatibility guide. Will it float?

I bought the above P4 processor and Intel motherboard for a client, not realizing that the processor's Compatibility Guide number is 04A and the motherboard's is 05A or 05B.

I ALREADY KNOW THAT THEY'RE BOTH LGA 775. So they'll physically fit together.

Are they electrically and logically compatible? Can you back up your answer with documentation?

Board: BLKDP965LTCK

Proc: Intel P4 531 3.0 Ghz, 800FSB, 1MB Cache, HyperThread, LGA775, Version# D62719-001, States on box: requires board PCG 04A or 04B.

Thanks in advance to fellow big green geeks.

Response by poster: I should note that not long ago I built a system from parts lying around where the MB and Proc Comp. Guide numbers didn't match and it worked fine.

But that was for me, and this is for a client. So it's important that I get it right.

Just for the sake of professionalism I would say no. For yourself is fine, but for a client I wouldn't. Is another few days waiting to get a different CPU or MB that big a deal?

Unless you want to possibly fix it down the road and take the reputation hit. I'm sure you could easily make up a reason that doesn't sound like you purchased incompatible parts unless your client is savvy enough to suspect that it was.

I haven't worked intimately with Pentiums for a couple years, so I can't tell you anything from experience in regards to possible problems with compatibility.

Response by poster: Nah, I've already told the client that I made a goof and ordered wrong.

I think that admitting to errors up front and without prompting helps the client see that if something's really wrong, they'll know about it as soon as I do.

I just spoke to my client, and we're ordering a new Proc that will be in spec, so it really isn't a critical issue.

Still, it would be nice to know if the proc would work with the board.

I was searching for some socket 775 compatibility info just the other day. I don't think it's like the socket 370 days anymore. Back then, everybody was moding to get the latest CPUs into their old boards..
