How can I get my iPod to cooperate with my computer?

Why can't I use my iPod with my computer?

I'm running Windows XP Professional, I have a 3rd generation iPod and iTunes 7 (with the latest updates).

Shortly after installing and using iTunes 7 with my iPod, all of a sudden, it told me that my iPod was corrupted (I haven't ever mistreated my iPod) and it wouldn't let me restore. After trying to restore my iPod, it would give me the dreaded error 1418. Now, iTunes doesn't even recognize my iPod and Windows says that the device has malfunctioned.

I've tried changing the drive letter, using Windows to reformat the iPod (which didn't work, it says the drive cannot be formatted), stopping and restarting the iPod service and I just can't use my iPod with my computer. It still plays music and everything.

Help!

Response by poster: I have searched, but none of those things apply to my problem.

"Shortly after" makes it sound like coincidence to me. Is your iPod freezing at all or skipping certain tracks? If so, it's the hard disk dying.

It sounds like you aren't the only one.

Do you have another computer available you can try it out on? Can you uninstall iTunes 7 and install an older version? Here's a link to 4.1, which I believe is what came with the 3rd Gen.

Unfortunately, I can't find anything closer to 7, though some heavy Googling might do the trick.

I ditched iTunes 7 and returned to version 6. I'm happy as a clam. I put a todo in my calendar for 6-months from now to download version 7 again and give it another try. Maybe they'll have the bugs worked out by then. It's garbage right now, I think. Just go to any users board and see how many people are having problems just like yours.

You don't need to go back to 4.1 as an earlier post suggested. Just go back to 6.x. You'll be fine. It was very stable before they moved to 7.
