Overheard-conversation filter: someone described a fascinating book, but I didn't catch the author nor title, just the plot. A guy creates an independent nation on a small island between the US and Canada. I didn't catch much more than that, the island-state has just a house and a garden, and the guy dresses in the militaristic manner of a South American dictator.
It was described as being an older book if that helps.

Wikipedia also has a really page about micronations - real and fictional -too - if Moosylvania is not where you were thinking of you might find the place listed here.

It sounds very much like the Family Guy episode E. Peterbus Unum. Perhaps it was based on the book you're after.

I've heard of this book some time ago but can't dig up the title. If it helps anyone search, I believe there was also a movie (perhaps made for TV/cable) based on it.

I think it may have been "Meanwhile Back At the Castle" from Scholastic. I remember having it when I was a kid in the 1970s.

Not your book, but Thomas Perry's Island is a good read about a fictional nation created on an island in the Caribbean.

At first I thought you were talking about Quebec.

Robert, thanks for the answer (at least to the story I am recollecting), not finding it was annoying me greatly!
