Where did the phrase "It's ____, stupid!" come from & what was originally in the blank? I knew at one point (and remember that it's political in nature), but I've since forgotten & it's driving me crazy!

Best answer: Are you talking about "It's the economy, stupid?"?

It's the economy, stupid.

Not that I'm calling you stupid. It's a quotation.

Best answer: Should also be noted that it's prob originally derived from K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid), the mantra of marketers, politicians, and writers everywhere.

A Google search for it's the * stupid gives you the correct answer. (Use * as a wildcard.)

I pity the fool who hasn't seen Billy Wilder's wonderfully dyspeptic Kiss Me, Stupid (1964).

I always thought it came from an explanation of why Gillette was giving out razor handles.... you know, to sell more razor blades. Some kind of old-timey business quote.

"It's the blades, stupid!"
