Need POS system to integrate with web store

I'm opening a retail store that will sell CDs, books, photographs and other music-related collectibles. We hope to open a web store concurrently and have found a web designer. I'm looking for advice about point-of-sale systems for our store, and in addition we are interested in linking the inventory in our retail store to our inventory for our web store. Our webstore is being developed using x-cart. Any recommened POS systems or vendors? Anyone set up a system like this recently?

The key is inventory logistics! You don't need to tell your web customers how many of what product you still have, but be able to serve customers who are dependent on your inventory. Running a web store in connection with a real retail environment is to consider these as two completely different stores. You'll have the same inventory and customer services, but you'll also have to deal with entirely different sets of problems. Considering that you are managing two separate outfits will help you extract yourself from the notion that the sales online will have something (or anything) to do with your non-virtual retail space.
