SMS Shortcode

I'm interested in getting my own sms shortcode in the US. I have no clue about anything else involved in the technology or where to even start the search. Does anyone have some good resources to understand the technology and leads on how to go about purchasing the shortcode? OS X solutions preferred.

For technology, you might want to check out Simplewire. Thats who my company goes through and we've had no problems.

Be aware that getting a new short code set up with the carriers is a real pain in the neck and can take many months, especially if you plan on billing users' cell phone bills.

The Business of Software forum over on JoelOnSoftware.com had a good discussion of this a while back and recommended a few companies who sort it out.

Do you really *need* your own short code??? $7k-$13k is quite a hefty price to pay!
