Explain the ending of 'Cure' to me.

Japanese Horror, what the heck happened at the end of "Cure" ? Spoilers, please.

So I just saw this movie, the one about a crazy hypnotist who kills people indirectly. It was cool, interesting, not that great. Anyway, I'm sure it's because I'm not that deep and don't understand the J-Horror mythos, but the end of the movie confused the hell out of me.

Did Takabe kill his wife? Did he hypnotize the waitress? What the hell? How did Mamiya break out of jail? What was with the stool, him banging away at the radiator? What was the meaning of the black crosses, and the repeated use of water?

I'm all for a director leaving some questions unanswered, but I feel completely in the dark about what the hell was going on for the last 10 minutes.

Have you checked out the discussion of the ending on the film's IMDb forum?

For those who aren't registered with the forum, the ending is deliberately left ambiguous so that people will be able to discuss different theories. Here's an interview with the other Kurosawa.
