I'm afraid you can't name him after me, Dave.

Help me name my new PC. My home network is full of machines named after William Gibson characters.

I just built myself a new desktop and I want to name it in accordance with the existing theme.

I currently have the following machines:
Neuromancer (laptop)
Wintermute (my current desktop)
Sensenet (the router)
MollyMillions (daughter's desktop)

Tell me which character from the Sprawl trilogy I should name this new machine after and why.

Case is a shiny black mid-tower with a chrome bubble on the front. It looks just like this

Thanks Hivemind! You're the greatest!

how about Case? Not only the Neuromancer nod, but a Pattern Recognition reference too.

Other posibilities TheFinn? Uhh.. what's the name of Wintermute's counterpart computer?

3Jane!
Yonderboi!
Tessier-Ashpool!
Hideo!
Armatage!

A cute little case like that has to be a 3Jane though..

(I did the same thing! My music server is called Neuromancer....I'm such a nerd!)

The Marcus Garvey
Dixie / Flatline
Newmark

but I really like

The Villa Straylight (or just Straylight)

Where it fits in your menagerie might help - is it a media server, a basic email/web appliance, or just a second desktop?

TheFinn, without a doubt.

Or, Lupus Yonderboy.

Johnny Mnemonic? Bonus points for giving it a password which renders it useless to everyone, including yourself.

my two drive partitions are neuromancer and wintermute...we're not just nerds, we're clichéd nerds.

my vote for colin
after that talking pda thingy kumiko has in mona lisa overdrive

or maybe after one of the AI loa that show up in that book:

And they are there, the Horsemen, the loa: Pappa Legba bright and fluid as
mercury; Ezili Freda, who is mother and queen; Samedi, the Baron Cimetire, moss
on corroded bone; Similor; Madame Travaux; many others. . . . They fill the
hollow that is Grande Brigitte. The rushing of their voices is the sound of
wind, running water, the hive. . . .

Response by poster: Rock Steady, it's a replacement desktop....Wintermute will likely become the media server. Keep up the great suggestions everybody.

Best answer: Case is a shiny black mid-tower

Then you've already named it Case.

Maelcum, if Case won't work. Or Ono-Sendai.

3Jane? Armitage?

Depends... is it a nifty powerful desktop? If so, Dixie.

Is it a collection of salvaged parts? Then go Case.

..or you could put Win98 on it and call it Wilson...

Anyway, what about characters from the bridge series? A veritable goldmine of nomenclature. I'd gall it God's Little Toy myself.

Oh, there's so many:

Aleph-0
ChibaCity
DeadChannel
RazorGirl
TheOracle (yes, yes, The Matrix, I know. Gibson used it first. Much like The Matrix, funnily enough )
Babylon ( yes,yes, The Matrix, I know, Gibson,ohhh, pffft.)
LiveWireVoodoo

Oh, and you should probably call your workgroup/LAN name The Sprawl.

Make it a dual boot, call the unix-y version Corto, and the windows-y version Armitage (because the windows side is sure to go nuts at some point).

or the other way around if you prefer! ;)

You can call your network group BAMA.
(Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis, special points for the ghetto slang overlap)

scheptech, I was also going to suggest that and some others from virtual light.

Then I remembered that it isn't in the sprawl trilogy.

Are you really sticking to just the sprawl? The bridge books are fun too :)

Response by poster: ROU_xenophobe gets best for giving the blindingly obvious answer: Ono-Sendai. That's the brandname of Case's cyberspace deck.
"Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7"

Thanks everybody.
