Error connecting to MDDB server - what does it mean?

When I'm using a browser I keep getting a message that pops up to say: "Error connecting to MDDB server to get next informer URI:http:// etc. etc /nextSyncInformer?maxHops=3£maxDate=2006-08-06T" and stuff I don't want to type on here because it might give my identity away or something. What does it mean and how can I stop it?

Which browser are you using? Do you have a proxy setting in this browser? Is your proxy server set to "Auto-Detect"?

In IE, go to Tools->Internet Options. Then look under the connections tab. Under LAN settings (if you are connecting via a network connection) is where you will find proxy info. Otherwise it will be in the settings for the dialup connection.

In Firefox, you'll find proxy settings under Tools->Options, then select the General Tab, and choose "Connection Settings".

A screenshot of the error might also prove useful if possible, but it may reveal more than you wish to reveal.

I haven't had this error and couldn't find anything with google, but the phrase "sync informer" makes my spyware sense tingle. I assume you are running Windows. Do you have the same problem if you use an alternative browser? Are you running any browser toolbars, internet accelerators, or "free" peer-to-peer software? Maybe try running a few spyware/trojan scanners. None of them are perfect, but running several of them gives a better chance of finding all the infections. I have used Ad-aware, Spybot, Ewido, and Microft's new one. (But beware because some of the so-called spyware scanners are themselves spyware!) It is best to reboot into safe mode before running the scans.

Response by poster: Firefox is not set to "Auto Detect" but to "Direct Connection to the Internet". I also have IE and opera on the machine. Wil check them too

I will try AdAware etc. and report back.

Thanks for your responses

Googling error connecting to "MDDB Server" suggests you have SAS installed and it's generating an error. I didn't get too far into the results, but the fix may be in there.
