Bag of books...

Does anyone know of a used book store in Suffock, NY (Long Island - preferably near Babylon) where I can unload a large amount of books I appear to have unintentionally horded? I'm an avid reader and those that don't get filed for rereading have started to take over a corner of my kitchen. I'd donate them, but would much rather trade them in for cash or credit for more reading materials.

have you tried Bookcrossing? It doesn't fit the 'making money' criterion but you can find other reading material for free with a little bit of effort...

Book Revue in Huntington buys books. They're really picky but it's probably worth a shot.

somebody asked this question in the Long Island livejournal community (700+ members) and didn't get any answers, except for book revue.

If you're willing to sell them off one at a time you might try selling them through Amazon. I've had very good luck selling off lots of books in a relatively timely manner.

You could pull out some of the nice, hardcover nonfiction titles and take them into the Strand in Manhattan. You might not get much, but it's better than nothing. I sold one box of high-end textbooks there and got about $90.

I got more money than I expected from the Strand for a boxful of good condition mass and trade paperbacks that were on the esoteric side, mostly fiction and some history stuff.

Response by poster: Ah, and to amend the above question, I'm not looking to make money - at all. But have known a few bookstores in New England that would give credit for trade ins, and that's more along the lines of what I was hoping for. I just really like to read and rather crack a book then flip on the tv.

Forget really local. Take a weekend trip out to Niantic, CT and hit The Book Barn. They are a fabulous used book store over several floors and buildings, complete with their own herd of wandering cats. My husband and I are big time book hoarders, and have brought (and bought) many there. If you want to try for money, it'll be tough, but their buying week starts on Saturday. You're better off going for credit. Expect to take some home - they always turn some of ours down.

If you like to gamble, Mohegan Sun is nearby. I like it far better than Foxwoods. I only play the slots, but there are nice restaurants there (with some of the better food choices in the area), some shopping, and a pretty hotel. There's also Mystic nearby, with the aquarium, and more shopping and touristy things. There's definitely enough to keep you occupied for a weekend. Say hi to Randi for us. :)

Google makes it 3 hours and 10 minutes from Babylon to Niantic, but they don't take ferries into account. If there's a ferry across to CT from the east end of the island, that should be shorter.
