What is this goofy song about everything the band didn't do?

I heard a song back in the early 90's where the band was spinning a tall tale about everything they wouldn't do, I remember something like "Then we won't release a boxed set with the special extended acoustic edition of the non-hit that we never got onto MTV" Seems like a Barenaked Ladies thing but I got nowhere searching their songs, any clues?

"That's a Lie" by Too Much Joy. They were so much fun. Lyrics here.

I don't think this is it, but "Not Gonna Make It", a surprisingly great album track from the Presidents of the United States of America, is on this theme: (lyrics.)

Response by poster: Thanks, but neither of these is it. They both look good though!

Sounds like it should be a "They Might Be Giants" song to me. I don't recognise it though.

cacahuete, did the video for "That's a Lie" have one or more fake endings with fake band and album names (in the classic MTV font), one being "Son Of Sam I Am"? I've always wanted to remember who that was....

Kimota, I don't think I've ever seen the video for "That's a Lie". Would love to, though. Sorry!

And sorry it doesn't seem to be the right song. : (

Too Much Joy were tons of fun, but "That's a Lie" is a cover of an LL Cool J song.

Best answer: Could it be Todd Snider's "Talking Seattle Grunge Rock Blues", all about the band on Unplugged that wouldn't play acoustical versions of the songs they refused to play in the first place?

The lyrics are here. Doesn't seem to match, nevermind.

Response by poster: No sir, that is the one! That would also explain why I haven't heard it since, the satire is quite outdated...

Thanks!
