Favorites websites? I can only refresh the blue so many times...

I looked for a previous post for this, but the one closest to my ask is ten years old. I'm looking for websites with good writing on current events – not even mostly political, but also pop culture, accessible science-y content, and other stuff I might not even know I'll like...

I've realized that my online perusing world has gotten very small, and after this past week I've had to stop looking at some to save my sanity (farewell Reddit main page randomness). I like Boing Boing and Laughing Squid, for reference. That old ask recommended these, all of which I've read here or there, but never had as regular online visits:

The New Republic
The Atlantic
The New Yorker
Vox
Raw Story

Thoughts on their current quality? What other sites do you head to after you catch up on MeFi?

I get the print edition of The Atlantic, and I love it. It covers a variety, and does so thoughtfully.

I pretty much always like what Cory Doctorow has to say.

For tech news (and some adjacent pop-science and pop-culture) I like Ars Technica and to a lesser extent The Verge.

Yes Defector! They have a great science writer and good crosswords in addition to all the sportwriting.

I also sub New York Magazine but that’s not a wholehearted recommendation - I enjoy it with some reservations. It and the New Yorker are good ways to keep up with rich new yorkers and the arts, broadly.

I read CBC news to keep up with Canada (Manitoba is my local coverage) and occasionally dip into AP News for headlines.

Tumblr browsing (although I am not a member) gives me more art and weird meme content.

404 Media, Propublica, Kottke, Waxy, Daring Fireball, News Minimalist.

I have a blog of my own where I write personal essays and link to things I find interesting: A Tiny Bell.

I use Reddit but never ever r/all or the front page. I have curated a number of communities that I like, and only see those feeds. It is mostly women's fashion, parenting, sports, and local news. Maybe that would be a way to keep some part of that experience.

The Conversation is pretty great. They "publish trustworthy and informative articles written by academic experts for the general public and edited by our team of journalists." I am probably biased bc I am an academic, but it's nice to know the author of a piece knew what they were talking about before they decided to write an article about it.

Looking at my RSS feeds, I'll also suggest Axios for general US news, EFF for tech-related issues, The 19th for gender issues, Smithsonian Smart News for nerdy stuff, and News As Facts for depressing headlines from around the world.

(And seconding Ars Technica, The Verge, Propublica, 404 Media, & Kottke as well.)

OK, I tend to visit Pinboard Popular periodically since I find that it is a nice random source of links and is how I find info or stories that I probably would not have found otherwise. And, thanks for the answers above which I will now add to my list of sites I like to visit.
