Personal experience restoring matted carpet?

Hi! I'm looking for personal tales of DIY restoration of matted wall-to-wall carpet, presumably with a carpet rake and a steamer or some other device. I don't expect it to be perfect--I just want it to be good enough to rent to fairly well-to-do students. Considering the high price of putting down a new floor, cost is no object for this question. Thank you!

Hire a carpet steaming professional is my advice.

Have you priced out new carpet? With the decline in popularity of carpet it might be worth calling an “end of the roll” place to see what it would cost. In my experience it was always an affordable option and might give you a quick solution to your issue. If the carpet is so matted, the underlay may also be flattened and a wholesale replacement worthwhile.
