How to rethread this strap?
It is not a ratchet strap
Best answer: mhoye’s threading directions are correct, but there’s no ratcheting mechanism, so it’s not a ratchet strap. It only gets tighter by pulling, and releases when the clamp is depressed.

Response by poster: The problem is that it requires 3 hands. One to hold where it says "Press", one to feed the strap between the crimp and metal base, and one to pull it through.

Response by poster: Got it. I cut a strip of a cereal box to slide in between the crimp and the base, then the strap slid in.

Best answer: With it on its side, like in the photo or in your hand, press the lever partway with one hand and use your other hand to push the strap through. There should be a lot of how-to videos if you search for "NRS straps" (the main brand of friction straps used for kayaks and canoes), like this one, which work on the same principle as what you have.

Push several inches of strap up through the bottom, behind the clamp lever. Then pinch the clamp open, and feed the end of the strap under the clamp. Once it emerges from the outer end of the clamp, you can continue to pull it through even if the clamp lever is released.

Best answer: No. This strap is meant to go in under the clamp, wrap around a bar inside the buckle, and then come out under the clamp again. The bar is missing. It's obvious where it should be—there are a couple holes in the side plates.
These are called "lashing straps," and that particular kind of buckle is called a cam buckle.
