My husband reserved an uber to pick up my sister in law to take her to the airport. The ride history shows it took her to a spot in Itzcala! She was supposed to email. We have heard nothing. How do i contact uber or what do i do next. Very limited Spanish

I’m not sure what “Itzcala” is referring to. If it is actually Iztacalco, that is a part of Mexico City that is right next to the airport.

Can you not phone her or WhatsApp her?

Response by poster: Theoretically she is on the airplane right now.

Ok take a deep breath, you might be spiralling a bit here: First off, there are two things going on here, and they may or may not be related.

Thing one is that someone who apparently needs someone else to organize an Uber for them (and therefore I infer, may not be super technical) has failed to send an email confirming they made it to the airport on time. Has this happened before? How reliable is this sister with checking in when asked?

Thing 2 is that an Uber trip that was supposed to end at an airport, instead ended at an intersection about 8km past the airport. This does not actually say anything about where the passenger may have gotten out. (It should/could/usually does, but that's not the same thing at all.)

I suspect the most likely explanation is in two parts:
Uber driver realized the passenger didn't have the app, meaning they weren't being tracked by Uber for ride accuracy , extended the trip after they dropped the passenger off by just failing to end the ride. It's also possible it's an error, Uber apps sometimes just show BS data.

Meanwhile the not-technical sister just forgot to send the email, because checking in at the airport is hectic and busy and it's easy to forget such things. In future this is what the location sharing features Google and Apple provide are for, you can track people without them having to remember to check-in.

Both of the areas you've named are quite large districts, akin to Boroughs. What was the first, more specific address that you mentioned? Was that where she was picked up? What time is her flight due to arrive?

Best answer: Itzapalpa and Itzacalco are two adjoining boroughs next to the Mexico City airport. Maybe the driver just didn’t mark the trip as ended until after dropping off your relative and leaving the airport? Have you used the help/contact links inside the Uber app or website?

You could also try contacting the airline to see if they are able to tell you that your relative is on their flight.

you could try calling the airline to confirm if the person is on the flight.

Response by poster: Thank you, all. It’s good to know the address isnt too crazy. And from myown experience it isnt always easy to get wifi at the airport. She doesnt answer her phone, but that doesnt mean anything. My husband will call the airline now

Thank you all responders, and thank you, Metafilter

yeah, to be fair, the wifi is paid-only and very shitty at Benito Juárez.

Technically, Uber isn't allowed to drop off at the airport, so funky things could happen at the end of an Uber trip there. I usually get a cab, but last time I took an Uber, and the driver hid his phone at the end and said we had to pretend to be relatives. I can imagine a situation where the driver pulls out their phone again later to end the trip?
