What are your must try goodies from Iceland?

We're traveling to Iceland for a 4 day trip, will be based in Reykjavik and doing trips from there. We're sorted for food while there (although if you have a must try recommendation, I'd love to hear it). However, I'd like your suggestions for consumable gifts to bring back for family - what are your favorite, made in Iceland (or I guess not widely available in western Europe or north America) treats / snacks / cooking ingredients? Open to sweet, savory, just no fermented fish

Best answer: My husband loved the little chocolate and licorice candy called Þristur. There is also a chocolate shop in Reykjavik called Omnom that is excellent.

This is not a consumable, but hands down our favorite souvenir from Iceland are the yellow reusable shopping bags from Bonus grocery stores. The pig is perfect and silly and I love them. Whenever someone I know goes to Iceland I request more bags (I am not always successful).

If you have knitters in your life, get them some Lopi yarn. It's not edible, but for knitters, it absolutely counts as a consumable item!

Best answer: Salty licorice! Weird, not everyone's cup of tea, but if people hate it then they'll still be entertained - you can find lots of different kinds.

Best answer: You want to get your loved ones some Nóa Kropp. It’s basically chocolate-covered Kix and it’s amazing.

A friend brought me back a bar of milk chocolate with salty licorice in it and it was delicious. (Note: I love both milk chocolate and salty licorice.)

Best answer: seconding Bonus bags they are the best.

they have a type of garlic in iceland it might be chinese garlic? but its's one big clove & it's great- you can get it at Bonus.

reykjavík Roasters roasts their own coffee on-site in their main shop downtown

if you go to the hydroponic tomato farm in the golden triangle they have a cute little spice shop with rubs for meat and other seasoning stuff.

there's also a lot of harvested in iceland salt you can get.

there's also some made in iceland hot sauces that come in convenient tiny bottle variety packs i got some as a gift and they were so great for camping trips and weekends away

Best answer: I got a box of rhubarb hard candies at Sandholt that I still think about regularly. Highly recommend.

It's perishable so maybe a challenge to bring home on the plane, but man, what I wouldn't give for an Icelandic hot dog.

I still think about these paprika noodle-like snacks constantly.

Best answer: re: the hot dogs my parents brought home some of the Hot dog sauce and the fried onions (from Bonus) so that's a staple of hot dog season at home now.

I really like Brennivin aquavit. It is available in North America and some European countries, but perhaps there are expressions that they don't export.

Best answer: Ris is a fabulous cheap-ish chocolate bar, but if you want FABULOUS chocolate, get Omnom chocolate bars - EVERY single person who tried it when I gave them a taste test agreed it is DA BEST

As for food - you MUST go to Icelandic Street Food - the soup in bread bowls is good, but the FREE waffles are amazing!!

Response by poster: Thanks everyone! We're back with Omnom chocolate bars, Ris and Noa Kropp for the chocolate lovers in the family, and salt, hot dog sauce and licorice for the non-choc people.

We weren't able to make it to icelandic street food, but will next trip. There was so much amazing food to try! Didn't get the candies from Sandholt, but we did get breakfast there and it was so good!!
