Amoebesque children's book

I’m trying to find a kids book I read about 1992. It was about a game where you inhabit different organisms, leveling up between them by having to solve a problem. I remember the first creature was an amoeba type thing that possibly only saw in two dimensions and could not lie.
I think I read this and it feels like a William Sleator but I can't find a match in plot summaries.

Best answer: Yeah, if feels like Planiverse (a sort of update to Flatland) got scrambled with Interstellar Pig, a William Sleator novel about competing in a game with lots of different alien species and puzzles. It has a sort of 'level up' feel when new info and items are acquired.
Both are worth a read, even if they aren't your book!

Just too late but I knew exactly what this was. Interstellar Pig is such a strange and wonderful book and I think of the scenes where the hero inhabits the other players often.

I think I'll go read it again, I haven't read it since around then either!
