Cool small thing to bring a cool small person from Salt Lake City?

I’m at a professional conference in Salt Lake City. I want to bring something of this place home to give to or share with my second grader. What do I want? I’m staying and working downtown and don’t have a ton of free time to go outside this area. We’re not Mormon. Ideas?
Is there a museum that sells small fossils in the area?

Sea Monkeys. The Great Salt Lake is full of brine shrimp, aka sea monkeys. 7 is the perfect age to discover the joys of brine shrimp, which look and act nothing like their package copy, always a valuable lesson to learn.

When I was about that age, I was always impressed by the little soaps, shampoos or anything else with the hotel's name. I still have a few notepads he brought home stashed some were.

Welcome to our weird town!
To piggyback on chariot’s point, yes — the gift shop at NHMU might have something like that!
Food-wise, you can pick up a bottle of fry sauce in most stores, I guess. Or at Hires Big H.
The gift shop at the Little America Hotel may have some kid-friendly options. Cahoots (9th and 9th) or Cabin Fever (Trolley Square) might too, but you’ll have to sift through more age-inappropriate fare.

Best answer: Utah has lots of geode beds, and I’d bet your kid would love a box of half a dozen unopened geodes and a kid-sized rock hammer to crack them with.
Google shows a fair number of rock shops in Salt Lake City, but the sites I clicked on only seemed to want to show places you could dig your own.
If you do get geodes, ask the shop to make sure one or two have crystals inside instead of or in addition to the more common banded agate only geodes.

Seconding jamjam. That is a fabulous suggestion.

Response by poster: Thank you all! Found some geodes for sale, which I wouldn’t have thought was a Utah-specific thing without asking here!
