Looking for alternative to Google Tasks.

So I thought I really liked using Google Tasks to manage my ToDo's. However, I've created about eight different categories and found that I can't re-order those categories. I can delete a category, but that also nukes the items in that category. So I'm looking for a non-subscription task manager that lets me delete or manage categories, export in plain text, that will also sync between Android, OSX and the iPad, and can put dates and alarms on tasks. And world peace.

I use Obsidian but am not sure if creating task lists in that app will clog up all of my notetaking.

The holy grail would be some sort of plain text task manager and note organizer that would painlessly synchronize between Android, OSX and IOS.

I'm ok with paying for an app, but don't like paying a monthly subscription. I have a macbook, and ipad and a Google Pixel and would love to be able to sync between all three. I can't currently sync Obsidian between my Android phone and iPad, however.

There are a number of other small annoyances, like I can only export tasks in JSON which has to be converted to some other format. What I like is that I can access it via the web, or my phone. I also appreciate that I don't have to pay a subscription fee.

I think my ideal task manager would be Google Keep, but with reminder dates attached to some items.

The holy grail would be some sort of plain text task manager and note organizer that would painlessly synchronize between Android, OSX and IOS.

Todoist is fantastic, and has a free plan.

Microsoft Todo, which used to be WunderList, is available for free, even though Wunderlist itself seems to be dead.

I support the Microsoft Todo suggestion - it works really nice across devices and is fun/easy to use. Reber the founder of wunderlist now has https://www.superlist.com/ which looks interesting.

Response by poster: Thanks for taking the time to help. You are pushing me in the right direction.

Literally every time I try to use a Microsoft app that requires authentication I have a problem. Do I log in with my work email? Because then it becomes kind of my work task list, and it feels weird piling on the personal tasks in that space. But I installed Microsoft ToDo on my phone using my work email and it was flawless! Hooray, the Microsoft Authentication Curse is over. And it synced with my Outlook tasks. Yay!

Then I tried to install the standalone Microsoft ToDo app on the Macbook, and as I tried to log in with the exact same work address I start getting a flood of error messages;

Account Switch Detected We were unable to verify your account. Please sign in for 100xxxxxx@xxx.edu or cancel and try a different account.

and also

You can't sign up here with a work or school email address. Use a personal email, such as Gmail or Yahoo!, or get a new Outlook email.

Arguably I don't need to use the standalone desk client and can just use Outlook. So maybe I'll try that.

I've had a ToDoist account for probably a decade but never used it. Recently I couldn't get it to log in using Gmail (there's a pattern here) so I completely deleted the account and opened a new one that seems to work. So I think I'm going to use ToDoist for personal tasks and Microsoft ToDo for work tasks, so there's a little separation between work and personal tasks.

Of course, Obsidian task management is beckoning me . . .

Probably the question I should be asking, and will do so soon, is: How can I move past my endless system-searching as a means of advanced procrastination and just start doing more meaningful stuff?

And actually, some amazing advice about that problem came out of this askme
